The Nittany Lion is the mascot of Pennsylvania State University. It is a mountain lion, also known as a cougar or panther, that roamed central Pennsylvania in the 1800s. H. D. "Joe" Mason, a member of the Class of 1907, is credited with creating the Nittany Lion as Penn State's mascot.
Before the Nittany Lion, Penn State's athletic teams were known by various names, none of which had official status. The choice of the Nittany Lion was inspired by the legendary "Nittany Mountain"[(https://www.wikiwhat.page/kavramlar/Nittany%20Mountain)] near the campus and the fact that the mountain lion was native to the area. The "Nittany" part of the name comes from a Native American term, likely Algonquin, meaning "single mountain."
The Nittany Lion is known for its strength, courage, and agility, symbolizing the spirit of Penn State. The Nittany Lion Shrine [(https://www.wikiwhat.page/kavramlar/Nittany%20Lion%20Shrine)], dedicated in 1942, is a popular landmark on campus and a frequent photo spot for students and visitors.
